The appropriated image of the girl in this piece is from the late 19th century.

The photo was taken by the doctors who intended to fit the girl for prosthetic legs.

She was described as" bright" and quite capable of getting around by walking on her hands.

One can't help but wonder if the prosthetic devices did improve her life and if she even wanted them.  Was she somehow convinced that she would be more "normal" and therefor, "better"?
